Association of DM Among Smear Positive TB Yemeni Patients,YAHYA A. AL-EZZY and FAKER A. ALQUBTI

 

Abstract
Background: The peculiar relationship and frequent asso-ciation of tuberculosis and DM was the reason this subject was chosen.
Aim of the Study: 1- To determine the relationship between DM and TB patients. 2- To study the characteristics and risk factors for patients of DM with TB.
Methods of Study: The study was comparative case-control study in Sana'a city during the period from 20 July 2005 to 20 September 2005.
Results: The DM among TB patients was 13% and 6% among control "odd ratio 2.341". The diabetic TB patients was more common among male 77%, in comparison to female 23%, it was more in middle aged (40-59 years) (53.8%) while it was less among elderly (7.7%).
The diabetic TB patients occur more in urban (61.5%) than in rural areas (38.5%).
The diabetic TB patients were more among moderate income (61.5%).
The diabetic TB patients were more common among illiterate 46.2% but non among high educational level patients. The body mass index in diabetic TB patients was normal in 46.14% while 30.76% were underweight. The family history of DM was present in 15.4% of diabetic TB patients and absent in 84.6%. Of all diabetic TB patients 7.7% had history of TB while 92.3% had no history of TB.
Conclusion: There is positive correlation between DM and TB positive smear patients and it is of great importance to screen each DM patient for TB.
