Versatility of Rectus Femoris Muscle Flap in Groin Reconstruction after Inguinal Lymphadenectomy,SAMY RAMZY
Abstract
Background: Groin dissection for inguinal lymphadenec-tomy may be associated with considerable morbidity i.e.; skin defects, sometimes infection and sloughing of skin flaps.
Aim of Work: To evaluate our experience of pedicled rectus femoris muscle flap covered by partial thickness skin graft for reconstruction of groin defects resulting after inguinal lymphadenectomy.
Results: A total of 12 flaps in 12 patients were performed between January 2005 to May 2010. Five groin defects were reconstructed primarily and 7 defects developed after slough-ing of flaps were reconstructed after debridement. Seven patients (58.3%) were males and five patients (41.7%) were females. Age ranged between 27 and 70 years (Mean 48 yrs.). All defects were reconstructed by pedicled rectus femoris muscle flap. Satisfactory coverage of groin defects was achieved in all cases. There were no partial or complete flap losses. All muscle flap donor site incisions healed and all patients achieved durable long-term coverage.
Conclusion: This flap was found to be technically easy and reliable with low rate of subjective donor morbidity. A postoperative rehabilitation program may improve the outcome.
