Role of Platelet-Rich Plasma to Decrease Post Tonsillectomy Pain and Bleeding AYMAN H. SALAH ELDIN, M.D.

Abstract
Objective: To determine whether topical application of autologus platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the tonsillar bed at the time of tonsillectomy would decrease postoperative pain and bleeding.
Study Design: Prospective randomized single blinded study.
Methods: Forty patients were recruited to participate in the study, age between 18-40 years. In each patient one side is randomly chosen to be the treatment side (PRP) and the other side is served as a control side. Postoperative pain scale (numbered pain scale) was obtained and recorded in a home diary which included also reporting of any bleeding.
Result: 40 patients were included in this study. 2 patients did not submit their diaries, so they were excluded from the statistics. Significant difference between the PRP side and the control side regarding postoperative pain and earlier healing.
Conclusions: Topical application of PRP on the tonsillar bed once at the time of operation improves postoperative pain and recovery in adult patients.
