Abstract
Background: In type 2 diabetes, endothelial dysfunction is detectable very early in the course of the disease and vWF is a well-known marker of endothelial dysfunction and can be detected early and used as a marker of endothelial dysfunc-tion in type 2 diabetes.
Objective: Measure plasma levels of vWF activity in patients with type 2 DM and to evaluate its utility in the early detection of endothelial dysfunction in comparison to other known factor of endothelial dysfunction as FMD.
Study Design: This study was conducted on 50 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus chosen from diabetic outpatient clinic at Kasr Al-Ainy University Hospital in the period from 2009 to 2011 there was classified into two groups: Group I which included 25 type 2 diabetes patients with normal UAE and group II included 25 patients with type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria and 20 healthy volunteers serve as control group.
Results: In the present study plasma levels of vWF are significantly higher in patients with type 2 diabetes with normal UAER (group I) and in patients with microalbuminuria (group II) compared to controls also FMD of brachial artery was significantly diminished in diabetic patients with microal-buminuria (group II) than diabetic patients with no microal-buminuria (group I) with no significant difference between diabetic patients with no microalbuminuria and control group.
Conclusion: Plasma vWF activity can be used as an early marker of endothelial dysfunction in type 2 diabetes.
