Abstract
Background: Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in worldwide, it is one of the most fearful and stressful disease. Therefore, cancer and its treatment not only threat to physical welfare of patient but also their psychological, social, financial an spiritual well being.
The present study aimed to assess concerns of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and combi-nation therapy about self care. A descriptive design was used. The study was carried out on 122 adult cancer patients at the Oncology Institute in Damietta City. The data were collected using two tools: Tool (I) Socio-demographic characteristics and clinical data sheets. Tool (II) Concerns of cancer patients. The results of this study revealed that the studied cancer patients in the three treatment modalities were more concerned about physical concerns as side effects of therapy, rest and sleep alteration, nutrition and fluid alteration, work alteration, psychological, social relation alteration, attention and concen-tration alteration and physician consultation. In addition, statistically significant relations were detected between socio-demographic characteristics of the studied cancer patients in the three treatment modalities and concerns about side effects of therapy. Also there were statistically significant differences among patients in the three treatment modalities as regards to age of 60-80 years, residence (urban), social life (married patients) and patient diagnoses of cancer (1-3) years and psychological concerns. No statistical significant differences were found between socio-demographic characteristics of patients in three treatment modalities and social relation alteration and spiritual concerns. The study recommended that, should be to provide nursing care for cancer patients based on psychological, social, and spiritual concerns of the patients not only on physical concerns.
