Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the diag-nostic value of transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS) and computed tomography (CT) in evaluation of suspicious ovarian masses whether being malignant or not former to surgical intervention. This will help to a greater degree, in selection of type of surgery either conservative or radical.
Patients and Methods: This prospective study was carried out from January 2011 – January 2014, in Bab Alshaaria University Hospital on seventy patients presented with suspi-cious ovarian masses detected clinically or by ultrasound examination. All patients underwent transabdominal Ultra-sonography (TAUS) and CT scan with determination of diameters of mass, site of mass, papillary projections, char-acteristics of cyst walls, identification of capsular infiltrations, the presence of solid areas inside the mass and presence of ascites. All the removed specimens were sent for histopatho-logical diagnosis using paraffin sections and stained with hematoxylin and eosin stain.
Results: TAUS had sensitivity of 77%, specificity 86.8%, positive predictive value of 85.3% and negative predictive value of 81.9%. CT scan showed sensitivity of 91.4%, specif-icity of 82. 1 %, positive predictive value of 81.2% and negative predictive value of 90.6%. The comparison between two tests was statistically not significant (p>0.05).
Conclusion: There was no significant difference between TAUS and CT scan in evaluation of suspicious ovarian masses whether benign or malignant. TAUS is as accurate as CT scan in evaluation of suspicious ovarian masses.
