Hematological Modifications Following Single Bout of Endurance Resistive Versus Endurance Exercises in Elderly Men, GIHAN S. MOHAMED
Abstract
Introduction: Aging is associated with modifications in hematological and immunological functions so susceptibility to develop various diseases is increased. Changes of the normal blood rheological properties is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. So exercises have been shown to decrease the physiologic changes with aging.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare the effect of one session of endurance resistance exercises versus endurance exercises on hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils and lymphocytes in elderly men.
Methods: Thirty elderly men with age from 60 to 70 years were enrolled in this study. Subjects were divided into two groups: Group (A) 20 men received resistive exercises (which included five leg exercises: Knee flexion, extension, hip abduction, adduction, and standing calf raise) at 75% of 1RM) with endurance exercises (30 minutes on cycle ergometry at 75% predicted heart rate maximum) and group (B) 10 men received endurance exercises only 75% predicted heart rate maximum. Serum hemoglobin, hematocrit, RBC, WBC, neu-trophils and lymphocytes were measured before and immedi-ately after exercises.
Results: The results of this study revealed statistically significant increase in serum hemoglobin (3.49%) for group (A) and (0.49%) for group (B), serum hematocrit (0.74%) for group (A) and (0.44%) for group (B), Serum WBC (23.1%) for group (A) and (1.37%) for group (B), Serum neutrophils (5.85%) for group (A) and (1.24%) for group (B). Also, there were statistically significant increase in Serum RBC (12.1%) and Serum lymphocytes (2.7%) for group (A) but there were no statistically significant increase in Serum RBC (1.81%) and Serum lymphocytes (2.39%) for group (B) post exercises.
Conclusion: It was concluded that endurance resisted exercises caused significant improvement more than endurance exercises on hematological modifications in elderly men immediately after session.
