The Effect of Nursing Management Process Applied by Head Nurses on Quality of Patient Care in the Main Mansoura University Hospital, NAGWA G. ABD ELMOGHITH, SEHAM I. HAMOUDA and SANAA A. IBRAHIM
Abstract
Background: Today, many people are concerned with finding the best ways to meet their were health care needs, each member of the health care organization must be account-able for the quality and cost of health care.
Aim of the Study: Measure the nursing management process which was applied by head nurses on quality of patient care.
Design: Analytical descriptive research design was utilized to fit the purpose of the study.
Setting: The study was conducted at all inpatient units in the main Hospital of Mansoura University started in October 2011 and was completed by the end of May 2012.
Sample: A sample of 54 head nurses and 206 patients, collected from the inpatient departments of the Main Mansoura University Hospital, using two tools. It included self admin-istered questionnaire, and an observation checklist collected from the inpatient departments of the Main Mansoura Univer-sity Hospital.
Tools for Data Collection: Data of this study were collected by using self administered questionnaire for head nurses and observation checklist for patient.
Results: The results of the present study revealed that, there's a statistically significant relations found between staffing element and quality of patient care. About two third of head nurses were applying most activities on an acceptable level as staffing and controlling process, while they were unacceptable for planning, organizing and directing generally. According to the relation between quality of patient care and total management process applied, statistically significant relations were found related to: Hygiene, keeping privacy, exchange information, environment, total unit center, and total practice with total management process applied by head nurses.
Conclusion: The study concluded that, about two thirds of head nurses applied management process with acceptable level. There are no statistically significant relations found to planning, organizing, directing, and controlling elements and quality of patient care. There’s a statistically significant relations detected related to staffing element and quality of patient care. Statistically significant relations were found related to: Hygiene, keeping privacy, exchange information, environment, total unit center, and total practice with total management process applied by head nurses.
Recommendations: Based on the study results it is recom-mended to designing training programs based on management educational needs of nursing management so as to improve the unacceptable administrative functions. Continuous mon-itoring of patient satisfaction to detect the needed improvement items and satisfy their expectations from care. Encourage nurses to acquire new skills to increase the quality of patient care.
