Abstract
Objective: Assessment of the use of Sengstaken-Blakemore esophageal catheter in the management of non traumatic postpartum haemorrhage.
Methods: The study include 26 women admitted to our hospital with intractable postpartum haemorrhage not respond-ing to medical treatment and were considered critical by the obstetrician atonic (n=20) & coagulopathy (n=6) and underwent treatment by insertion of intrauterine tamponade with seng-staken-blakemore tube.
Results: Regarding age, parity, gestational age, BMI, time of insertion and time of removal there was no statistical significant difference between both groups (p>0.05). Regarding cause of postpartum haemorrhage nearly 76.9% of cases were caused by atony and 23.1% of cases were caused by coagul-opathy. Regarding success rate there is only 4 failed cases 2 of them were treated by bilateral internal iliac artery ligation, 1 treated by bilateral uterine artery ligation and 1 treated by hystrectomy.
Conclusion: Postpartum hemorrhage remains one of the top five causes of maternal mortality worldwide in both the developed and developing countries. Sengstaken-Blakemore catheter was used in controlling of postpartum hemorrhage, it is effective Tamponade and simple to use. Its use effectively controls bleeding in 84.6% of cases when medical treatment has failed.
