The Effect of Different Techniques of Breast Milk Expression in its Fat Content in Mothers of Preterm Infants, GIHAN FOUAD, AFAF KORRAA, GHADA ZAGLOL, MANAL ZAHER and REHAB SADEK

 

Abstract
Breastfeeding preterm infants present unique challenges that include establishing and maintaining a milk supply and transitioning from gavage feeding to breastfeeding. Mothers of preterm infants must pump for weeks or months until their infant is able to feed directly from the breast.
The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of different techniques of breast milk expression by hand tech-nique alone and mechanical pumping alone and in combination by Hand on Pump “HOP” in changing the fat content of milk in mothers of preterm infants.
Fifty lactating mothers of preterm infants aged 7-14 days, with a gestational age at birth ranging from 30 to 36 weeks were included in the study.
Milk samples were collected from the mothers in three sessions each one lasts for 5 minutes from each breast:
1 st session: Mothers express milk by hand expression.
2nd session: Mothers express milk using mechanical pump.
3rd session: Mothers express milk by “HOP” this technique combined both mechanical pumping with manual maneu-vers, which included (breast massage, compression, strip-ping and, if needed, hand expression).
We concluded in this study that, HOP technique which is combining mechanical pumping and hand maneuvers leads to the higher fat content than other methods which means increase the energy content of the breast milk for preterm infants.
This study showed that HOP technique had the higher volume and show that the right breast had the bigger volume of milk than the left breast.
In this study, the breast milk fat content was increasing with mothers’ parity, inversely related to mothers’ age, and was not affected by mothers’ BMI.
