Factors Affecting Nurses' Commitment to their Organization at Suez-Canal University Hospitals, NADIA M.E. GHONEM

 

Abstract
Background: Nurses' commitment is vital element for health care institutions, not only for the quality of care, but also for patients' satisfaction for different types of provided health care services.
Aim of the Study: The present study was designed to examine factors affecting nurses' commitment to their orga-nization and to assess the relation between these factors and level of nurses' commitment to their organization.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted in all Medical and Surgical Departments at Suez-Canal University hospital with using a convenience sample of 171 nurses who working in the same previous settings, providing direct patient care and not working as any administrative nursing positions included in the study. Self-Administered Questionnaire (SAQ) was used to collect the data of the study which consisted of 3 parts, Part I; concerning scio-demographic characteristics of study sample, Part II, consisted of 31 items classified under (6) basic factors of nurses’ commitment and Part III, it consisted of 45 items classified under eight main dimensions of organi-zational commitment.
Results: More than half of nurses were female, married and having diploma education and majority of them (77.7%) working in medical departments with more than 10 experience years. And also, the highest level of organizational commitment (79.5%) related to factor of nurses' autonomy in the organi-zation. While the lowest level of nurses' commitment (12.9%) related to factor of nurses' interaction within organization.
Conclusions: The study results lead to the conclusion that a significant influences of factors affecting nurses' commitment on level of organizational commitment among them. As well as, there was statistically significant differences between level of organizational commitment and factors affecting nurses' commitment to their organization. This study recommended that periodic measurement of organizational commitment in the hospital to assess changes and implementation of the proposed recommendations.
