Abstract
Background: Amateur weight lifting is one of the most popular outdoor activities among young adults. Yet, there is a deficiency in research concerning its effects on hip muscles' strength.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess the normalized eccentric peak torque values of hip extensors, abductors and external rotators bilaterally in amateur weight lifters and a matched control group.
Methods: Thirty male individuals (15 amateur weight lifters and 15 controls) with mean age of 21 .762.58 years, weight 76.7t12.92kg and height 173.66t7.42сm participated in the study. Data were collected using the Biodex Isokinetic system at an angular velocity of 120°/sec.
Results: 2x2 Mixed design MANOVA revealed that there were no significant differences between the two groups for all tested muscles except for the normalized peak torque value of the external rotators. Also, there were no significant differences for all tested muscles between right and left lower extremities in both groups.
Conclusion: These results suggest that amateur weight lifters must concern with eccentric strength exercises for hip extensors, abductors and external rotators to prevent future injuries.
