Effect of Weight Reduction on Psychological State in Obese Egyptian Females, RASHA M.A. BARAKAT, INAS T. EL-SAYED, MAYSA SAMY, FATMA MOUSSA and MERVAT M. EL-RAFIE
Abstract
Background: There are many hypotheses to support a relationship between weight loss and improvements in health. Moderate weight loss (5-10% of initial weight), leads to positive psychological changes, such as improvements in mood, body satisfaction and self-confidence, in addition to the physical benefits.
Objectives: Our goal in this study is to upgrade the health status of obese females by reducing their co-morbid condition and psychological health problems as depression using weight reduction intervention program.
Methods: The study is designed as a longitudinal inter-vention study to reassess group of the cases (BMI >_25.00) who lost 5-10% of their original weight. It took place in National Nutritional Institute NNI for obesity clinic including 50 obese women. All subjects were assessed for the psycho-pathology especially depression by using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II).
Results: Showed that reduction of 5-10% from the original body weight lead to statistically significance improvement of beck score of depression between the two periods (pre and post) intervention.
Conclusion: Reduction of weight 5-10% of the original weight is recommended to improve the psychological condition especially depression.
