Assessment of the Health Status of a Group of Overweight and Obese Adult Egyptians, SHADIA FREIG and WAFAA M. ISMAEIL
Abstract
Background: Obesity is a serious health problem that has physical and psychosocial consequences.
Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the situation of the health of the overweight and obese adults in Damanhur, Beheira Governorate.
Subjects: 546 adults were randomly selected from attend-ants of the National Nutrition Institute Center in Damanhur, Beheira Governorate.
Methodology: Each participated individual was subjected to an anthropometric measurements and some biochemical parameters were determined.
Results: The highest prevalence of anemia, diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia was more among the obese. The highest prevalence of LDL-C was among the overweight group. The highest prevalence of vitamin A deficiency and hyperthyroidism was among the normal group. The highest prevalence of chromium deficiency was among the overweight group, while zinc deficiency was more among the obese group. Following a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent overweight and obesity.
Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated an association between obesity and overweight and increasing prevalence of anemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism, chromium, zinc and vitamin A deficiency.
Recommendation: Following a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent overweight and obesity.
