Effect of a Multimodal Physical Therapy Program for Treating Cervical Radiculopathy in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial, WANEES M. BADAWY and OLFAT I. ALI
Abstract
Background and Purpose: Cervical radiculopathy is a dysfunction of a nerve root of the cervical spine which is common in old population. This study was conducted to determine the effect of a multimodal approach on improving outcomes in old patients with cervical radiculopathy.
Patients and Methods: Thirty patients from both sexes aged from 60 to 75 years. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups; Group (A) was the study group that received traditional physical therapy program and a designed program, while Group (B) was the control group that received traditional physical therapy program alone. Outcome measures include Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Cervical Range of Motion (ROM) and Neck Disability Index (NDI). Measurements were obtained pre-treatment and at the last session post-treatment, after six successive weeks (three days/week).
Results: There were statistical significant differences between the two groups in VAS, favoring Group (A). Although there was no significant difference between the two groups concerning cervical (ROM) and NDI.
Conclusion: A multimodal physical therapy was shown to be effective in reducing pain, functional disability and increasing cervical range of motion in old people with degen-erative cervical radiculopathy.
