Comparison between Males and Females Cognitive Functions in Stroke Patients, RASHA M. EL-REWAINY and WALAA M. RAGAB
Abstract
Background: Difference of cognitive functions between males and females has an effect on the rehabilitation outcomes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the cognitive functions between female patients versus male patients with stroke.
Subject: Fifty healthy subjects (25 females and 25 males) and 50 stroke patients (25 females and 25 males) (were selected from outpatient clinic, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University) participated in this study, their age (subjects and patients) ranged from 55 to 65 years, duration of illness was from 6-18 months and education of patients and subjects is at least nine years.
Methods: Both of healthy subjects and stroke patients received cognitive assessment via Rehacom system as four categories were assessed which are figural memory, attention concentration, reaction behavior and logical thinking; each category was assessed for 30min. Results showed significant better cognitive functions of elderly healthy females in com-parison to elderly healthy males in attention concentration and reaction behavior categories while better cognitive func-tions in figural memory and logical reasoning categories of elderly healthy males in comparison to elderly healthy females and these results are supported by the results of stroke patients. Generally healthy aged subjects showed better results in comparison to patients with stroke.
Conclusion: On basis of the present data, it is possible to conclude that elderly females either healthy or stroke patients have better preserved cognitive function in attention concen-tration and reaction behavior categories while elderly males also either healthy or stroke patients have advantages at figural memory and logical reasoning categories.
