Pregnant Women Beliefs on the Impact of Oral/Dental Health on Pregnancy Outcomes, NAGWA R. ABEL-AZIZ, MAGDA A. FAWAZ and NADIA B. EL-SHARKAWY
Abstract
Background: Pregnancy is a physiological process characterized by physiological changes, including oral cavity.
Aim of the Study: The aim of the current study is to assess pregnant women beliefs regarding impact of oral/dental health on pregnancy outcomes.
Subject and Methods: Descriptive research design was adopted for this study was conducted in EI-Fayoum Governorate El-Nabawi El-Mohondes and Atsa Central Hospital, A Convenience sample of 266 pregnant women attended the antenatal clinic were recruited based on certain inclusion criteria.
Tools: Two tools were used for this study: (1) structured interview questionnaire contains two parts (a) Demographic and (b) Obstetrical profile of the study sample; and tool (2), includes beliefs about impact of oral/dental health during pregnancy on pregnancy outcomes.
Result: Age range of the study samples was between 2139 years old with a mean of 31.214.7, the mean age at marriage was 21.713.4, 54.1% live in urban area, 39.1% had university degree, 72.9% were housewife, 58.6% low income and 71% without health insurance, also this study result reveal 93% from the study sample belief that changes that occurs to mouth during pregnancy are normal, and all the study sample (100%) think that oral health is a low priority, 98.5% belive that poor maternal oral health can affects childhood teeth. Also, the study sample shows that (47.4%) had fair beliefs, compared to (34.2%) had poor beliefs respectively.
Conclusion and Recommendation: The results of the present study indicated that pregnant women had fair beliefs regarding the impact of oral/dental health on pregnancy outcomes more attention to oral and dental education programs is recommended during pregnancy.
