Abstract
Background: Renal failure is an ominous complication in patients with Multiple Myeloma. In this study we evaluated clinical and laboratory parameters that might affect recovery of renal functions in multiple myeloma patients.
Methods: All medical and haemodialysis (HD) records were reviewed in Multiple Myeloma patients who underwent HD in the Clinical Haematology Unit and Nephrology Unit of Internal Medicine Department of Kau Al-Aini Hospital between January 2011 and May 2015. Forty patients with Multiple Myeloma had underwent HD. The clinical features and the factors that might be associated with recovery of renal function leading to discontinuation of HD in Multiple Myeloma patients with severe renal failure were examined. Patients with controlled hypertension and diabetes were also included if not having previous renal diseases.
Results: We have noticed that most of patients with Multiple Myeloma complicated by renal failure were recovered from acute kidney injury (AK') during our follow-up period. The most common inununoglobulin was'ge (50% of patients). We have noticed that patients who required maintenance HD had higher mean age (p=0.028), lower mean haemoglobin concentration (p=0.025), higher mean serum calcium (p= 0.03). Other factors were statistically insignificant.
Conclusion: Our study showed that the age of the patients, haemoglobin level and serum calcium were significantly different between the group who recovered from renal failure and those who required continuation of HD but none was independent prognostic factor for predicting the probability of recovery from severe renal failure and discontinuation of HD in Multiple Myeloma patients who needed HD.
