Abstract
Background: Recently there has been renewed interest in this block to provide long lasting unilateral anesthesia and for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Paravertebral block has been successfully used to provide analgesia for multiple thoracic and abdominal procedures in both adults and children.
Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of continuous Bupivacaine/Dexmedetomidine in thoracic para-vertebral block in controlling thoracotomy induced pain.
Material and Methods: We studied 30 patients. 15 patients in each group, undergoing thoracotomy in the lateral decubitus, thoracic paravertebral catheter was inserted prior to induction of general anesthesia, and hemodynamic profile and consump-tion of anesthetics and analgesics were recorded at different intervals in addition to visual analogue score post-operatively.
Results: There was more hemodynamic changes on inci-sion in Group B-peri-Dex and more efficient pain control compared to Group B and accepted visual analogue score values post-operatively in these patients.
Conclusion: Continuous Bupivacaine/Dex thoracic para-vertebral block is an effective method of controlling thoracot-omy induced pain.
