Abstract
Background: Regional Anaesthesia is a commonly per-formed technique for patients undergoing ophthalmic proce-dures. The question whether to stop or continue anticoagulants prior to Surgery especially in A.F. patients is often debated. In the present study the aim is to find the safest approach for the patient undergoing cataract surgery.
Methods: Forty-five patients with A.F. on Warfarin un-dergoing cataract surgery were studied prospectively; patients were divided into 2 groups; peribulbar group continuing Warfarin (group 1, n=30) and peribulbar group stopping Warfarin (group 2, n=15) with an INR up to 3 IU.
Results: The incidence of complications as ecchymosis, edema and especially bleeding were not significant.
Conclusion: It is better to continue Warfarin till surgery as there was no significant bleeding incidence reported; i.e. not to expose the patient to life threatening events as throm-boembolic complications.
