Case Report: Huge Number of Fibroids Removed from Nulligravid Uterus, LAILA EZZAT
Abstract
Introduction: Uterine fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas or fibroids, are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. Most women have no symptoms while others may have painful or heavy periods. If large enough, they may push on the bladder causing a frequent need to urinate. About 20% to 80% of women develop fibroids by the age of 50.
Case Presentation: A 38-years-old woman nulligravida) presented to our department as out pationt clinic complaning of menorrhagia. On physical examination, the patient's general condition was satisfactory, her abdomen was distended with fundal level about 24 week laboratory tests revealed hemo-globin (7g/dL) and hematocrit value (36.4%), MCV (72.1) W. The patient recived blood transfution and HB became (11.6g/dL). The patient was counseled regarding options for management of her fibroids and menorrhagia and chose myomectomy. Surgery was done under spinal anesthesia. Intraoperative findings included presence of lage number of fibroides (61) the largest about 6 X 6cm, the fibroides were intramural, submucus and subserous the patient was discharged and will be followed-up at our outpatient clinic. She had an uncomplicated postoperative course and reported improvement in her menorrhagia.
Conclusion: Myomectomy is a surgery to remove one or more fibroids. It is usually recommended when more conser-vative treatment options fail for women who want fertility preserving surgery or who want to retain the uterus.
