Abstract
Aim of Study: To assess knowledge, attitude and practice of teachers toward Health Promotion (HP) program, applied at the level of Primary Health Care (PHC) centers in Abha City.
Subjects and Methods: A total of 400 teachers in Abha City were recruited in this study. The researcher constructed a study questionnaire, which included the following 4 parts: Personal characteristics, knowledge, attitude and practice.
Results: Only 15.5% of teachers were aware of the HP program. The main source for their awareness about HP program was PHC physicians (5.8%). Generally, most teachers' knowledge about HP was unsatisfactory (62%). The majority of teachers (95%) had positive attitude toward HP. Only 47 teachers (12%) visited the HP clinic. Teachers' knowledge about HP was significantly higher among older teachers (p=0.031) and among males (p<0.001). Moreover, teachers' knowledge was higher among those with less monthly income (p=0.037). Teachers' attitude toward HP was significantly more positive among older teachers (p=0.032) and among those with higher experience in teaching (p=0.033). Teachers' visiting HP clinic was significantly more among males (p<0.001) and those with higher qualifications (p=0.001). Moreover, teachers living in rural areas paid more visits to HP clinics than those living in urban areas (p=0.007).
Conclusions: Teachers have insufficient knowledge re-garding HP. Most of them do not know about the HP clinic. Physicians and mass media are the main sources for knowledge about HP. Teachers' attitude is mostly positive.
Recommendations: Programs should be conducted to promote teachers' knowledge about HP. They should be trained on the applications of HP at schools. Encountered difficulties against fulfilling received recommendations should be solved.
