Effect of Aerobic Exercises on Physical Functioning and Quality of Life in Lymphoma Patients, AMIRA MOHAMED, MOHAMED A. KHALAF, SAMY R. SHEHATAH and ASHRAF HASSAN
Abstract
Background: Lymphoma is a cancer of cells called lym-phocytes, which can build up in lymphnodes or any other place in the body.
Purpose of the Study: The currant study was conducted to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of aerobic exercise as a physical approche in improving physical functioning and quality of life in lymphoma patients.
Material and Methods: Forty patients of both sexes (21 male and 19 female) selected randomly from Cancer Institute Cairo University during the period of March 2013 to April 2014. With age ranged from 35 to 50 years old which divided randomly into two equal groups. Group (A) (exercises group) received aerobic exercise in the form of treadmill exercise 30 minutes 3 time weekly for 12 weeks plus chemotherapy. Group (B) received only chemotherapy for 12 weeks assessment: Was carried out pretreatment for physical functioning and quality of life and after 12 weeks. The gained data was analyzed by mean values of hemoglobin analyzed by using t-test, sex distribution analyzed by using chi squared test, median values of SF 36 analyzed by using Wilcoxon signed ranks test and median values of fact analyzed by using mann whitney u-test.
Results: The results of this study showed significant improvement in hemoglobin content, functional assessment of cancer therapy anemia and quality of life in Group A more than Group B.
Conclusions: It could be concluded that electric treadmill is extremely effective and in expensive tool in performing aerobic exercises and relives the muscle fatigue so improves the quality of life for lymphoma patients.
