Abstract
Background: Coccydynia is pain and inflammation of the coccyx or tailbone. Phonophoresis is used most often in treatment of inflammation in a muscle, tendon, ligament or other soft tissue in the body. Therefore, phonophoresis is considered an anti-inflammatory treatment.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of ketoprofen phonophoresis on coccydynia after vaginal delivery.
Methods: Thirty multiparous women suffering from coc-cydynia immediately after vaginal delivery participated in this study their ages ranged from 20 to 30 years, their number of parity ranged from 3 to 4 times and their body mass index did not exceed 28kg/m2. They were selected from Gyneco-logical Outpatient Clinic of New Cairo Hospital and were divided equally into 2 groups. Group A (control group): Received 50mg tablet of ketoprofen 2 times per day for 10 days. Group B (study group): Received ketoprofen phono-phoresis daily for 10 days where each session lasted 10 minutes. Assessment of pain level in each group was done by using visual analogue scale and plasma cortisol level in the blood at the beginning of the study and at the end of the treatment course.
Results: At the end of the treatment course, percentage of improvement in VAS and plasma cortisol levels was sig-nificantly high in the study group compared to the control group which means that Ketoprofen phonophoresis was more effective than medical treatment in alleviating pain in women suffering from coccydynia after vaginal delivery.
Conclusion: Ketoprofen phonophoresis has beneficial effects in alleviating pain in women suffering from coccydynia after vaginal delivery.
