Abstract
Background: Local or regional block is the preferred anesthetic technique for day case cataract surgery. Local anesthesia has been associated with complications as globe perforation. In the present study the target is to find out whether Ultrasound guidance will make a difference in patients undergoing cataract surgery using anterior SubTenon’s tech-nique.
Methods: Forty-five patients undergoing cataract surgery were studied. Patients were divided into 2 groups; anterior SubTenon’s group with Ultrasound guidance (group 1 n=30) and blind anterior SubTenon’s group (group 2 n= 15).
Results: There was no difference in the incidence of globe perforation and other complications as, edema and bleeding were not significant.
Conclusion: Ultrasound guidance needs trained skills and is very time consuming. Since there was no difference in the outcome the use of Ultrasound in these one day surgeries it is more of an obstacle than an advantage.
