Medical Records for Education and Training

Abstract

This comprehensive review aims to analyze the various methods, strategies, and outcomes associated with Electron-ic Medical Record (EMR) training. Drawing from 46 studies published between 2000 and 2019, the review evaluates the effectiveness of different training approaches in enhancing EMR proficiency among healthcare professionals and students. The primary objective is to provide insights into the optimal training methods for improving EMR utilization in diverse healthcare settings. The review identifies a range of training methods, including one-on-one training, peer-coach training, classroom training (CRT), computer-based training (CBT), and blended training. These methods are analyzed in terms of their prevalence, effectiveness, and suitability for different user groups. Additionally, the review examines various techniques employed within these methods, such as case-based training, process-based training, and role-based training, to assess their impact on enhancing EMR skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the review investigates the outcomes of EMR training across different levels of the modified Kirkpatrick model, focusing on aspects such as learning experience, attitude modification, knowledge acquisition, behavioral change, organizational prac-tice, and patient benefits. The analysis reveals positive out-comes in most studies, highlighting improvements in learners’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and overall learning experiences. Overall, this review provides valuable insights into the key con-siderations for designing effective EMR training programs. By synthesizing existing evidence and identifying gaps in research, it offers recommendations for future studies and informs the development of comprehensive training strategies to optimize EMR utilization in healthcare practice
