The Effect of Different Polishing Techniques on the Surface Roughness of Dental Restorations: (Review Artical)

Abstract

Background: Achieving a smooth surface texture is a cru-cial aspect of composite resins, as it directly impacts the dura-bility of the restoration and the comfort of the patient. Various polishing methods use distinct procedures, as documented in the literature. Aim of Study: This systematic study intended to consoli-date and examine the existing scientific information about the impact of polishing techniques on the surface roughness of na-no-hybrid and nano-filling composite resins. Methods: The research protocol of this systematic review was filed at the International Prospective Register of Sys-tematic Reviews (PROSPERO) with the registration number CRD4201705653. A systematic search was performed in Pu-bMed-Medline, Scopus, LILACS, and EMBASE databases, covering the time frame from 2007 to 2020. A rigorous evalu-ation of the articles that satisfied the criteria for inclusion was performed, including an assessment of their quality and a de-tailed examination of their content. Results: A total of 18 entries were included. There were a total of seven one-step polishing systems (PS), seven two-step PS, eight three-step PS, three four-step PS, and four five-step PS. The polishing procedures (PP) exhibited variation, with application durations ranging from 10 seconds to 60 seconds, and speeds between 10,000 and 30,000 RPM. Aluminum ox- ide played a crucial role in achieving a polished surface in the mixture. Conclusion: The multistep polishing methods, namely As-tropol and Sof-Lex Discs, demonstrated the highest level of effectiveness.
