The Impact of Different Firing Techniques on the Optical Properties of Dental Ceramics: (Critical Review)
Abstract
Background: Transparent ceramics are promising materi-als for optical applications due to their excellent optical prop-erties, chemical stability, and economic viability. Techniques like spark plasma sintering (SPS) have been utilized to produce high-density, transparent yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ce-ramics. Aim of Study: This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the latest advancements in spark plasma sintering for the production of advanced transparent ceramics. Methods: The study involves a review and analysis of the existing literature on the use of spark plasma sintering to fabri-cate transparent ceramic materials, particularly YSZ. Results: The review highlights that SPS is capable of pro-ducing high-density, transparent YSZ ceramics by optimizing sintering parameters. However, challenges remain in address-ing issues like grain growth and residual porosity that can im-pact the optical properties. Conclusion: Spark plasma sintering shows promise for the fabrication of advanced transparent ceramics. Further research is needed to fully understand and optimize the process to over-come the remaining challenges and improve the optical perfor-mance of these materials.
