Comparative Study between General Practitioners and Emergency Department Physicians About Antibiotic Use in Upper Respiratory Tract Infection in Kuwait Oil Company (Ahmadi) Hospital 2008,KHALED KHUDADAH, HUSSAIN YONIS, MOHAMAD AL SAGR and OMAR AL BOZ

 

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this work is to compare the uses of antibiotics in URTI between general practioners and ER physicians in our hospital.
Methodology:
•This is a retrospective descriptive study.
•Over three days 2772 patients were seen in the out patient clinics (GP 1971, ER 494, IMD 206, PAED 51 and ENT 50).
•Out of 2772 patients around 391 patients were labeled with URTIS+ (14.1%).
•Records of all cases registered in the files as URTI, common cold, flu or influenza, acute tonsillitis, acute phyaringitis, acute sinusitis and otitis media were collected over three days.
•Files were reviewed for diagnosis, age, sex, type and duration of antibiotics if prescribed.
Results: There is a significant changes in prescribing antibiotics 31% of the cases from FMD(GPs) in comparison with 53% from the ER side p value <0.05.
Recommeondations:
•Period of audit (to implement changes) needs to be on going to reach and maintain the standers.
•Team work is important to reach this result.
•The task of using antibiotics in URTIS is part of our KPI for this year and we hope with the help of all our collage to reach the international agreed standers.
