Abstract
Objective: To report the experience in endoscopic dacry-ocystorhinostomy (DCR) of the Otorhino-laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Department, Aseer Central Hospital.
Methods: All cases that were diagnosed and/or referred to the Otorhino-laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Depart-ment of Aseer Central Hospital to undergo endoscopic DCR during the period from 2004 to 2010 were included in this study (N=60).
Results: The mean age of studied cases was 50.4±16.7 years. Almost two thirds of patients were females (38, 63.3%). Epiphora was the predominant complaint in all cases (100%). Swelling of lacrimal sac was present in 7 cases (11.7%). Lacrimal obstruction/stenosis was idiopathic in 38 cases (58.8%). It was a result of postoperative complications (e.g., septal surgeries) in 10 cases (16.7%), trauma in 8 cases (13.3%). It was due to inflammation in 3 cases (5%). The mean duration of the silicone lacrimal tube fixation was 3.1±1.2 months. The mean duration of follow-up was 16.8±6.7 months. DCR was successful in 54 cases (90%), while it failed in 6 cases (10%).
Conclusions: Nasolacrimal duct obstruction is more common among females and middle aged persons. Endoscopic DCR is the treatment of choice for the treatment of patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. It leaves no scar and preserves the lacrimal pump system and yields high success rates.
