Impact of Intervention Program on Nurse's Knowledge and Practice Regarding Nursing Care of Pregnant Cardiac Patients During Labor, EMAN E.M. ELSABAGH and HALA I. ZAITON
Abstract
Patients with heart disease do well during pregnancy, but some patients with high-risk cardiac lesions will not tolerate the hemodynamic changes of pregnancy.
The Study Aims: To evaluate the effect of intervention program on nurse's knowledge and practice regarding to nursing care of pregnant cardiac patients during labor.
Material and Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used in this study which conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Labor Ward at Zagazig University Hospital. The study subject included two groups: Group I: Consists of all cardiac patients admitted for labor during a period of one year from April 2012 to March 2013 and Group II: Consists of thirty nurses provided direct nursing care for cardiac patients during labor. Tools of the study consist of four tools, the first tool was cardiac patient assessment sheet during labor, the second tool was knowledge questionnaire sheet, the third tool was an observational checklist for nurses' practice, while the fourth tools was intervention program.
Results: The study has revealed that statistically significant improvement in nurses' knowledge and practice related to nursing care of cardiac patients during labor were noticed at the post test.
The Study Finding Concluded: That the morbidity out-comes among the cardiac pregnant patients was reflected by congestive heart failure (CHF), arrhythmias, pregnancy-induced hypertension (preeclampsia), gestational diabetes, ante partum hemorrhage.
The Main Study Recommendations: Pregnant cardiac patient are high risk patients and need careful follow-up from medical and nursing team during and after pregnancy.
