Prevalence of Bronchial Asthma Among Secondary Schools Students At Abu Khalifa Village Ismailia Governorate,WAEL B. HALIM, KHALIL A. KHALIL, SOBHY A. SOBHY and SEHAM A.HASB-ALLAH
Abstract
Objectives: The objectives of this study are to Study prevalence of bronchial asthma among secondary schools students in Abu Khalifa Village and Identify risk factors affecting the prevalence of bronchial asthma.
Subjects and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional school-based study that was carried out on 407 students of Secondary schools in Abu Khalifa village.
Results: It was found that males represent 51.8% and females represent 48.2%, aged 14-17 years from 2 secondary schools, parents education were illiterate 37.8%, most of families' income is adequate in 65.6%, students exposed to smoking at both home and school represent 27.5%, Crowding index was 35.8%, bad housing and ventilation represent 11.5% and 8.1% have a positive family history of bronchial asthma and finally the prevalence was 9.6%.
Conclusion: This study concludes that prevalence of bronchial asthma was 9.6%. Males are more prone than females to be affected with bronchial asthma. The prevalence and severity of bronchial asthma are affected by the overall socioeconomic state and demographic variables; there is a strong relationship between family history of bronchial asthma and prevalence of bronchial asthma Smoking exposure either at home or at school is associated with a higher prevalence. Severity of bronchial asthma increases with high BMI.
