Abstract
Objective: To give an idea about the benefits and compli-cations of immediate post abortive IUD insertion compared with insertion on time not related to abortion or pregnancy.
Methods: This study was carried out at Sayed Galal University Hospital (Bab El-Sharia University Hospital) it-included two hundred women between ages 18 and 40 years who were recruited from those admitted via the emergency room with first trimester spontaneous abortion. All women were counseled about a method of contraception, particularly copper T-380, and divided into two groups: Group (I), which included 100 women who preferred immediate IUD insertion, and Group (II), which included 100 women who asked for late IUD insertion.
All women were followed at 2, 6, and 10 weeks after insertion of IUDs. Pain, Spontaneous expulsion, Post-insertion bleeding, Infection, PID, Menstrual pattern, Acceptance of the device were compared in both groups.
Results: Only 10 cases of group (I) were removed within the first month for complications while 9 of group (II) were removed for the same reason which is non-significant. Three cases expulsions occurred during this time period while two only occurred in group (II). The expulsion rates increased non-significantly for immediate insertion. Two IUDs were removed secondary to infection in (group I); also one was removed secondary to infection and vaginal discharge in (group II).
Conclusion: This study showed that insertion of an IUD immediately after a spontaneous abortion is safe and could be offered to those who have had an abortion and who askfor a method of contraception.
