Maternity Nurses, Knowledge and Practice about Emergency Contraceptive Methods at Maternal and Child Health Centers (MCH) in Mansoura City, HEND S. MOHAMMED, SEHAM Sh. IBRAHEEM and RANIA A. EL GAZZAR

 

Abstract
Background: Emergency contraceptive methods (ECs), refers to methods of contraception that can be used to prevent pregnancy in the first few days after intercourse. It is intended for emergency use following unprotected intercourse, contra-ceptive failure or misuse and rape. The aim of the present study was to assess maternity nurses, knowledge and practice regarding emergency contraceptive methods.
Material and Methods: A descriptive exploratory study was conducted at Maternal and Child Health Centers care in Mansoura city during the year 2013-2014. The sample was 100 nurses. A structured interview tool was developed by the researcher to assess maternity nurses, knowledge regarding emergency contraceptive methods and Observation checklist used to assess nurses, skills during counseling regarding emergency contraceptive methods.
Results: Obtained from this study revealed that, high percentage of maternity nurses (84%) had poor knowledge about ECs, near two thirds of maternity nurses (62%) had unsatisfactory practice level about ECs. Meanwhile, only 3% had satisfactory about their total practice level about ECs.
Conclusion: It can be concluded that, deficit knowledge and practices among studied nurses about ECs.
Recommendations: Maternity nurses should be trained to improve availability, accessibility and raising awareness about ECs.
