Abstract
Background: The Progestin-Only Pills (POP) are effective means of contraception with good compliance. Although not quite reliable as the combined oral contraceptive pills, progestin only pills have less contraindications and can be used safely during breastfeeding. Desogestrel which is third generation progestin, has advantage of inhibiting follicular development in 97-99% of cycles.
Aim of The Work: The aim of present work was to study the effect of progestin only pills on FSH, LH, E2 and ovarian vascular indices, assessed by transvaginal colour doppler ultrasound, compared with vascular endothelial growth factor.
Patients and Methods: The present work compares fifty women of childbearing age fulfilling our eligibility criteria, before taking progestin only pills, and six months after use.
Results: In this study, age ranged between 23-36 years with the mean of 29.8±6.25 years. When comparing values at base line and 6 months after pill use we found that; VEGF ranged between 31.2-272 and 20-260 with the mean of 93.84± 66.81 and 87.98±59.35pg, FSH ranged between 2.12-9.63 and 2.65-10.4 with the mean of 6.15±2. 10 and 5.64±2.22mIU, LH ranged between 2.11-18.02 with the mean of 2.87-17.46 and 8.38±4.35 and 7.83±4.55mIU, E2 ranged between 5.15- 174.6 and 5.0-237 with the mean of 40.72±40.68 and 39.96± 49.86pg, at base line and after 6 months respectively.
Conclusion: Values of VEGF at base line was statistically higher than after 6 months (p=0.046). There were no statistical significant differences regarding E2, LH and FSH at base line and after 6 months. Doppler finding (S/D, RI, PI) for right and left ovary level at base line and after 6 months don't found statistical significant differences regarding S/D, RI and PI.
