Nurses Perception of Job Abuse and its Relation to their Absenteeism Rate at Outpatient Clinics in Giza, WAFAA R.A. RADWAN, EGLAL A. ABD EL-WAHAB and ENAS H. EL-SHAER

 

Abstract
Introduction: Workplace abuse in the health sector is a significant source of stress that negatively affects the well-being of nurses and the quality of their nursing care.
Aim: The aim of the current study is to assess the rela-tionship between nurse’s perception about job abuse and their absenteeism rate in outpatient clinics.
Subjects and Methods: Descriptive/correlation design was conducted at two outpatient clinics affiliated to health insurance organization in Giza El-Haram & Gezeret El-Dahab. The study sample was recruited from the above mentioned outpatient clinics of the two hospitals. It consisted of all available the staff nurses actually on the active work in the outpatient clinics at the time of data collection at the time of study.
Tools: Nurses perception questionnaire was used to assess nurses' perception about job abuse, it divided into two main parts: Self-administrated questionnaire sheet for nurses, nurses’ perception it was consisted of five dimensions concerned with nurse’s perception about job abuse and nurse’s absenteeism estimation check list.
Results: There was positive correlation between absen-teeism rate of the studied nurses and their perception toward job abuse scores in the outpatient department.
Conclusion: Based on the study findings it was concluded that the majority of the studied nurses perceived job abuse especially verbal and physical more than other types in the outpatient department and the main source of abuse was patient relatives followed by patients. Nurses had a high absenteeism rate. The main cause of nurses’ absence was due to interrupted annual vacation and sick leaves. There was a positive correlation between nurses’ absenteeism rate of the studied nurses and their perceptions toward job abuse in the outpatient department.
Recommendation: Avoid job abuse of nurses through: Decreased workload, activate job description for nurses at the work place. Presents of the security guards, preparing staff nurses to deal with abuse especially newly graduated nurses.
