Abstract
Objective: To study the pattern of skin cancers among patients attending a tertiary referral hospital (Aseer Central Hosital) in the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A retrospective case series study was done to review and analyze skin malignancies between January 2012 to May 2016. All histopathologically diagnosed cases of skin malignancy were included in this study.
Results: Out of 98 cases, the majority (93.9%) were Saudis and more than half (54.1%) of documented cases were males. The mean age was 52.8±25. 1 years. The most common ma-lignant skin lesions were CTCL (38.8%) followed by SCC (22.4%), BCC (19.4%), Kaposi’s sarcoma (9.2%), and malig-nant melanoma (7.1%). Other malignancies seen were DFSP (1%), Bowen’s disease (1%), and metastasis non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (1%). The most common site was trunk for CTCL. Head and neck for SCC and BCC. Lower limbs for MM and KS.
Conclusion: The most common skin cancers seen are CTCL followed by SCC, BCC, Kaposi sarcoma and malignant melanoma. In contrast to other studies from Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries, the CTCL is showing a trend towards increasing to be the most common type of skin malignancies while the site distribution for BCC and SCC are the same.
