Abstract
Background: Adherence and continuation follow-up visits are fundamentally important to the successful use of contra-ceptive methods and it is a multifaceted issue that is influenced by many factors. These factors can directly affect the level of women's adherence.
Aim: The current study was conducted to determine the factors associated with adherence and non-adherence to reversible contraceptives follow-up visits, among women in Port-Said City.
Methods: A descriptive retrospective study design was conducted and a purposive sample of 200 women of repro-ductive age was included in the study. They were selected from attendance at gynecological clinics in primary health care centers and were actually using contraceptive methods. An interview questionnaire was used and the data were col-lected within three months.
Results: The results of this study revealed that the majority (85.5%) of women were non-adherent to follow-up visits, while the rest (14.5%) of them were adherent. There were statistically significant differences between adherent and non-adherent women as regards socio-demographic characteristics as: Age, education and family income. The major problem reported by 63.74% of the non-adherent women was lack of advice about the importance of follow-up visits. Step-wise logistic multiple regression model revealed that the problems related to health care centers have strong association with the non-adherence of women to follow-up visits in the adjustment with other factors (i.e., it was increased with value 0.73 time).
Conclusion and Recommendations: This study concluded that: A high rate non-adherence to follow-up among the users of contraceptive methods in Port-Said City and recommended that: Nurses-woman relationship as well as women's knowledge of the importance of follow-up should be improved through educational program.
