Factors Affecting Intended Choice of Contraceptive Methods among Females Attending Family Planning Clinic in Upper Egypt, ASMAA M.A. SOLIMAN, OSHAH M. EL-SOUDY M. HASSAN and FARAG M.M. MOHAMED
Abstract
Background: Intended choices of Contraceptive Methods (CM) refer to the outcome of a dynamic process that is intended to ensure that clients can decide about their health care, particularly about family planning. When individuals make intended choices about family planning they are more likely to be satisfied with the chosen method.
Objectives: Detecting the factors affecting intended choice of different methods of contraception among women in Assuit City.
Subjects and Methods: Cross-sectional study of married women aged 15 to 49 attending family planning clinics. Using structured interview questionnaire through personal interview of the study population for 6 months from May to December 2015. The questionnaire schedule elicited information in respect of although the clients have intended choice or not, role of counseling and provider on change of clients intended choice, biosocial characteristics of the women. Descriptive statistics was done; analytic statistics were done as chi square, independent sample t-test and correlation tests. Multivariate analysis in the form of logistic regression.
Results: Among 400 married women, about one third of the females (34%) had intended choice to use certain method of contraception, 35.3%, intended to use IUD, more than half of married women (54.4%) heard about the method from the doctor. The significant factors related to intended choice were married women education, husband education, work, role of husband in choice of C.M, married women with previous use of C.M and married women with willingness to change the method.
Conclusion: The significant predictors for intended choice of C.M were: Husband role, previous use of C.M, health care provider as a source of information, secondary and university education of married women and their husbands and the husband being employee.
Recommendations: Counseling the husbands about their important role in the family planning and contraception use. Good client counseling and training of service provider in supplying different contraceptive methods with little side
