Comparative Study of Inpatient and Outpatient Type 2 Diabetics in Kasr Al-Aini Hospital: Health Services Research Study, MADIHA ABD EL-RAZIK, MONA SOLIMAN, HEBAT ALLAH MOSTAFA, MONIRA EL-KHOLY and KHOLOUD RASHED
Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes increases global health burden and forms a public health problem in Egypt due to increasing prevalence and disease complication. Therefore, apprising supply and demand sides is crucial to reduce diabetes disease burden in Egypt.
Aim of Study: To identify factors related to health system. and patient behavior that predispose to occurrence of diabetes complications.
Methods: The study was conducted in Kasr Al-Rini Internal Medicine Teaching Hospitals (HvUH). It is health services operations research evaluation study. Study population included IMTH inpatient diabetics with complications (cases) and outpatient diabetics (controls). The number of cases (250) included all admissions to randomly selected two units (out of б units) in IMTH within seven months. The control group (500) matched by age and sex with inpatients. A questionnaire form was used for structured interview with cases and controls.
Results: The met-needs for basic diabetes health services among cases was 52% versus 72% among controls. For cases the major sources were private sector (44%) followed by public hospitals (39%). For control group the major sources were Kasr Al-Aini Hospitals (66%) followed by private sector (28%).
Conclusion: Diabetic cases receiving and keeping compliance to the package of medical and counseling services have fewer tendencies to develop diabetes complications.
