Abstract
Background: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTc) is the most common malignant neoplasm in thyroid gland. Generally, it follows an indolent course, but it can be aggressive. Evidence suggests that tumors contain cancer stem cells responsible for aggressive course and relapses.
Aim of Work: Immunohistochemical evaluation of ALDHIAI expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma and сoпеlation between its expression and clinicopathological features of this tumor.
Material and Methods: This study was conducted on 50 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Immunohistochemical reactions were carried out by using ALDHIAI monoclonal antibody to detect cancer stem cells. Statistical analysis was conducted on results reached.
Results: 27і50 (54%) of cases showed positive ALDH 1 Al staining, 9 of which with high expression (18%). There was significant correlation between ALDHIAI expression and both gender (male) and tumor variant (follicular subtype). High ALDHIAI expression was noticed with tumor stage, lymph nodal deposits and nuclear atypia, however not statistically significant.
Conclusion: ALDHIAI expression could be potentially useful in detecting cases of PTС with poor prognosis and thus be targeted by stem cell therapy, however further many studies are needed to establish (his conclusion.
