Challenges for Proper Management of Type 2 Diabetics in Kasr Al-Aini Hospital, MADIHA ABD EL-RAZIK, MONA SOLIMAN, HEBAT ALLAH MOSTAFA, MONIRA EL-KHOLY and KHOLOUD RASHED
Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes is a serious public health problem that increases global health burden. The prevalence of diabetes risk factors and disease complications are increasing in Egypt.
The aim of this study is to identify challenges for proper management of diabetes and patient behavior that predispose to occurrence of diabetes complications.
Methods: The study was conducted in Kasr Al-Aini Internal Medicine Teaching Hospitals (IMTH). It is health services operations research evaluation study. Study population included IMTH inpatient diabetics with complications (cases) and outpatient diabetics (controls). The number of cases (250) included all admissions to randomly selected two units (out of б units) in IuTH within seven months. The control group (500) matched by age and sex with inpatients. A questionnaire form was used for structured interview with cases and controls.
Results: Major challenges for diabetes control strategies were stress management (80%). The four lifestyle issues with different control by cases compared to control were consuming fat free diet, consuming sugar free diet, physical exercises and regular drug intake (p<0.00).
Conclusion: Stress management, nutrition and physical counseling are of great importance for diabetes management.
