Medical Records and Their Role in Clinical Research

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to explore the potential of integrat-ing electronic health records (EHRs) into clinical research and identify key challenges and opportunities associated with their use. Methods: A comprehensive review of literature and ongo-ing projects in the field of EHR integration in clinical research was conducted. Key themes and findings were synthesized to provide a comprehensive overview of the current landscape. Results: EHRs offer a wealth of longitudinal data that can streamline clinical trial processes, enhance patient recruitment, and facilitate post-marketing safety surveillance. However, challenges such as data access delays, heterogeneity between systems, data security concerns, and variability in data quali-ty pose significant barriers to integration. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders are essential to address these challenges and promote standardized practices. Initiatives like the NIH Collaboratory and PCORnet demonstrate the feasibility of lev-eraging EHRs for research, but sustained efforts are needed to enhance validation methodologies and ensure regulatory ac-ceptance. Conclusion: Despite challenges, integrating EHRs into clinical research holds immense promise for advancing medical science and improving patient outcomes. By fostering collabo-ration, prioritizing data security and privacy, and investing in infrastructure and training, the healthcare community can over-come existing barriers and unlock the full potential of EHRs in clinical research
