Workplace Bullying and Its Psychological Effects on Public Health Employees: Role of Social Workers and Social Services

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to explore the psychological effects of workplace bullying on public health employees and the cru-cial role social workers play in addressing this issue. Methods: A systematic review of existing literature was conducted, focusing on the prevalence of workplace bullying within the healthcare sector, particularly among junior doctors. The review highlighted the complex dynamics that foster bul-lying and the psychological consequences for victims. Results: Findings indicate a high incidence of bullying in public health settings, with junior doctors being particularly vulnerable due to hierarchical pressures. The psychological impacts of bully-ing include decreased self-esteem, increased stress, and dimin-ished job satisfaction, which can adversely affect patient care. Social workers are identified as key players in mitigating these effects through advocacy, conflict resolution, and the develop-ment of supportive workplace policies. Conclusion: The involvement of social workers in ad-dressing workplace bullying is essential for creating a safe and respectful work environment. Their role not only aids in the recovery of affected employees but also contributes to the over-all health and efficiency of healthcare systems. Future effortsshould focus on integrating social work practices into organi-zational frameworks to effectively combat workplace bullying.
