Abstract
Background: Pregnancy is a critical period during which good maternal nutrition is a key factor influencing the health of both the child and the mother. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of the dietary counseling on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding healthy nutrition during preg-nancy.
Methods: This study is a randomized controlled trial. A sample of 160 of prim gravida in the first trimester aged from 20-30 years attending ANC clinic in the Center for Social and Preventive Medicine (CSPM), Pediatric Hospital, Cairo Uni-versity was taken during the period of March 2014 to February 2015. Sample was randomized into intervention group and control group. Baseline assessment of nutritional knowledge, attitude and during pregnancy was done for both the interven-tion and the control groups. A food frequency questionnaire was used dietary counseling sessions were performed for the intervention group only. At the last ANC visit, evaluation of the nutritional knowledge, attitude and practice was done for both groups.
Results: Showed that there was significant improvement in the nutritional knowledge, attitude and practices among the intervention group compared to the control group with p-value <0.001. Also, there was a significant difference in the frequent consumption of different food groups among the intervention group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Dietary counseling during pregnancy has an effect on improving the nutritional knowledge, attitude and practices during pregnancy.
