Abstract
Background: Excessive weight gain during pregnancy affects the health and well being of both mothers and their children. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of dietary counseling on GWG in pregnant women and pregnancy outcome.
Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial conducted at ANC clinic in the Center for Social and Preventive Medicine (CSPM), Pediatric Hospital, Cairo University. A sample of 160 of primigravida in the first trimester aged from 20-30 years was included and randomized into intervention group and control group during the period of March 2014 to February 2015. Baseline assessment of knowledge, attitude and practices toward healthy nutrition and weight gain during pregnancy was done for both the intervention group and the control group. Anthropometric measurements were reported. Face to face dietary counseling sessions were performed for the intervention group. At the last ANC visit, assessment of gestational weight gain, maternal and fetal outcomes were done. Also assessment of knowledge, attitude and practices toward healthy nutrition and weight gain during pregnancy was done for both the intervention group and the control group.
Results: Dietary counseling had significantly improved; frequency of consumption of different food items, KAP mean scores of the intervention group compared to the control group (p-value <0.001). Percentage of women who gain weight within recommendation was three times more among the intervention group than control group. Percentage of anemia, pregnancy induced hypertension, C/S labor, macrosomia and preterm babies were higher among the control group compared to the intervention group.
Conclusions: The results of the present study demonstrated that dietary counseling given to pregnant women has effect on prevention of excessive gestational weight during pregnancy and improvement of dietary practices of pregnant women.
