A Study on Bone Mineral Density in Rheumatoid Arthritis and its Relation to Various Disease Parameters, HALA H. ABD EL-MAKSOUD

 

 Abstract
Aim: To evaluate factors associated with low bone mineral density among patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Patients and Methods: 33 patients (32 females and one male) with age ranged between 31-71 years old, who fulfilled ACR criteria for rheumatoid arthritis.
Bone mineral densitometry was done by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry method for all patients.
Diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis were made using calculations based on the WHO. In addition, according to the recommendation of the international society for clinical densitometry, osteoporosis was diagnosed based on the lowest T-score among the three sites (lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip).
Osteoporosis was defined as T-score £-2.5 in lumbar spine (L2-L4) or left hip (neck of femur), osteopenia was defined as T-score between –1 and –2.5 and normal Bone Mineral Density (BMD) was defined as T-score above –1.
Patients were divided according to their bone densitometry results into three groups: Patients with normal BMD, patients with osteopenia and patients with osteoporosis.
The data about low bone mineral density (osteopenia and osteoporosis) and potential related factors such as age and Body Mass Index (BMI) (kg/m2) and factors related to rheu-matoid arthritis such as duration of disease, Disease Activity Score (DAS 28-ESR) and the use of methotrexate were col-lected.
The three groups were compared regarding BMD related factors and rheumatoid arthritis related factors in L2-L4 lumbar spine or left femoral neck, also were compared for the related factors in L2-L4 lumbar spine and left femoral neck separately.
Collected variables underwent univariant and multivariant statistical analysis.
