The Dietary Habits of Patients Having Metabolic Syndrome at Kasr Al-Ainy Outpatient Clinic, HEBA G. ELNHASSE, GHADA M. KHFAGY and SAHAR A. SHARF
Abstract
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors.
Objectives: This is a descriptive study aiming to determine the dietary habits of patients having MetS and to detect the relation between the major dietary habits and the components of MetS.
Methodology: A cross-section descriptive study conducted on 120 adults diagnosed with MetS using the Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines.
Results: In adult with average age of 45±7 years old and having MetS, it has been found that there is significant relation between consumption of carbohydrates, fast food, soft drink with increased waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose and triglyceride levels, while those who consume fruits and vegetables, fish and dairy products had significantly more better parameters of Mets. There was no relation found between meat and poultry consumption and MetS.
Conclusion: A dietary habits including fruits and vegeta-bles, fish and dairy products consumption, were significantly associated with reduced levels of clinical and biological markers linked to metabolic syndrome, whereas carbohydrates, fast food and soft drink intake showed opposite results.
