Abstract
Background: The patent ductus arteriosus accounts for a multitudes of morbidity and mortality in pediatric age group, and thoracoscopic ligation of PDA is one of modalities that face the anomaly.
Objective: To show the efficacy and safety and cost effectiveness of thoracoscopic ligation of PDA.
Patients and Methods: A total of 15 patients presented with PDA to Banha Children Hospital, Cairo University Children Hospital and Al-Azhar University Hospitals, their ages ranged from 9 months to 10 years, weights from 5 to 15kg (low weight due to effect of PDA) and their ductus varied from 3mm to 9mm were subjected to thoracoscopic ligation of their PDA.
Results: Fourteen procedures were successfully completed and one required conversion to an open thoracotomy because of bleeding.
Conclusion: Thoracoscopic closure is proving to be a safe and cost-effective means of dealing with PDAs. It affords the same efficacy as open ligation.
